As I immersed myself in a demanding job, there was frequently little time or energy available for physical activity. Unhealthy eating habits and inadequate sleep became the norm, leading to constant exhaustion and a diminishing enthusiasm for activities I once cherished. Frequent illnesses served as a stark reminder that change was necessary. Like many high-achieving professionals, I longed for a renewed sense of vitality and a more harmonious work-life balance.
It was amidst those demanding corporate days that I discovered the transformative power of fitness in 2012. This journey not only revitalized my physical health, but also fueled the energy needed to thrive in both my personal and professional life.
Today, I’m the head of research at ISDA. Alongside my role, I hold certifications as a Certified Professional Coach, a USA Triathlon Level I Certified Coach, a Certified Nutritionist, and a Certified Personal Trainer. My journey into the world of fitness and wellness began during the first year following my MBA program as I re-entered the corporate world. While my job was intellectually stimulating, a profound yearning for a new challenge stirred within me.
To the astonishment of family and friends, I decided to conquer Kilimanjaro, the majestic peak soaring 19,340 feet (5,895 meters) above sea level, marking Africa's highest summit. This choice represented a remarkable departure from my comfort zone. My last hiking experience dated back over 20 years, and I had never been particularly fond of it.
The decision to ascend Kilimanjaro meant willingly immersing myself in an unfamiliar adventure. It involved living in a tent on a mountain for a week, with no internet, no shower, and no toilet facilities. The added challenge of dealing with the harsh effects of altitude sickness made the journey even more daunting.
I still vividly remember that feeling of awe I experienced standing on the summit of Kilimanjaro,
watching a moonset and a sunrise. As I shivered from the cold, felt completely exhausted and battled the effects of oxygen deprivation, my soul was brimming with an overwhelming sense of exhilarating joy. That moment
forged an unbreakable connection between my passion for physical challenges and the extraordinary joy that they bring.
My commitment to fulfilling my dream of conquering Kilimanjaro marked the beginning of a profound personal transformation. Encouraged by my initial success, I ventured on to take on even greater challenges. After Kilimanjaro,
I climbed Aconcagua in South America, Elbrus in Russia, volcanos in Ecuador, and several peaks in Bolivia. My most challenging adventure was climbing Denali in Alaska, a mountain known for its extreme cold conditions and carrying heavy climbing loads.
But my journey didn't stop with mountains. It evolved, expanding my horizons into the realms of running and triathlons. I proudly count seven Ironman triathlons among my athletic achievements, each grueling event comprising a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Moreover, I've crossed the finish line of twelve marathons and ultramarathons, pushing the limits of my physical and mental endurance.
However, my fitness journey wasn't solely about achieving peak physical condition. It was about catalyzing a holistic change in my life. My transformation led to an increase in self-confidence, optimism, and overall life satisfaction.
With newfound energy at my disposal, I passionately pursued my personal and professional aspirations. My perspective shifted, and I began to believe that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Much like conquering a mountain or completing a race, I embrace life's challenges with resilience, taking one step at a time.
